| The newly completed North Iowa Recreational Arena in Mason City hosted its first IHSHL game on Saturday, February 5. The Waterloo Warriors topped Mason City 8–1. Nearly 1,000 spectators and special guests filled the arena for festive pregame ceremonies marking the official opening of the facility. |

| The IHSHL Executive Committee establishes the League’s first Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to the team accumulating the fewest penalty minutes during the regular season. The honor is named the "Roger Peterson Award", recognizing Peterson’s steady leadership and long-term service to the league. He served a three-year term as IHSHL President from 1979–82 and completed one year as League Commissioner in 1982–83.. |
| The Sioux City hockey program began skating in a new metal building that replaced the inflatable “Bubble,” which had been destroyed by high winds in July. The new facility, located in South Sioux City, Nebraska, was named the Marina Inn Convention Center.
